The four cornerstones of good leadership
I read an article in which Satu Huber, CEO of Elo
Pension Insurance Company, highlighted the cornerstones of good
management; management model, job descriptions, rules of the game, and
support. I liked that crystallization when those four issues are in
order, it also allows for a good employee experience and with it a corporate culture that enables goals.
Management model
The management model is a tool to functionalize the
strategy for the people working in the organization. The purpose of the
management model is to clarify the issues to be managed and the structure
related to the interaction, which supports the functioning of the core
processes and the cooperation between the people working in them. A good
management model enables flexible decision-making in the right place at the right
time, it is like an operating system that provides a framework for all the
activities to be carried out. A good management model creates a developing
corporate culture with room for learning something new. Clear
boundaries support spontaneity and creativity. When the action is easy,
positive emotions are created and with it better thinking. Without an
interactive and solution-focused management model, there can be no self-directed
organization. Or a powerful… group of self-employed people, each acting
alone guided by their own strategy, goals, and desires towards a foggy future.
Roles
The practical implementation of the management model
requires planning and implementation. Agree who is in what role and what
are the duties and responsibilities of each in relation to things and other
people in the work community. Define who leads and in which forums
encounters and decision-making takes place. An essential part of the role is
to make doing and progress visible. It succeeds in part through metrics
and monitoring. Together, agreed measurable issues and monitoring methods
enable everyone to commit to goals. Everything may not be measurable, and
therefore open and spontaneous expression should be given space in the daily
life of the work community, both informal meetings and in corridor or
“channel” encounters between the boss and the employee.
Ground rules
Workplace collaboration is streamlined by the rules of
the game about things that are considered important. These important
things may be unspoken behavioral issues that, unfortunately, often only become
familiar to people through mistakes. Together, the rules of the game make
it easier for new people to “integrate” into the work community. It
is told openly how the workflow works and what good it brings. The rules
of the game incorporate at least some of the norms that underlie behavior in
different situations in the workplace. The rules of the game ensure
equality, and by adhering to them, mutual appreciation.
Support
The development of the individual and the group
requires constant interaction and feedback on the work and activities that are done. The presence of the leader and the appreciation he shows creates a
positive atmosphere in which the courage to express one’s own opinions
grows. A skilled leader is able to present critical feedback in a positive
way, his or her ultimate purpose is to help the individual
develop. Even a positive challenge takes place by empowering and respecting
the person.
Of course, the role of a leader as a supporter does
not mean that he or she takes on the work of other people in his or her
group. His role is to work with the group to find the best solutions to
the challenges that have arisen. A good leader can also ask for help
himself. Tell your group that there are things where your own
professionalism, skills, and endurance are not enough. With open
collaboration with the group and potential outside parties, things tend to
move in the right direction. The coaching and work supervision
provided by the experts will help you to process and put into practice new ways
of thinking.
